Feels Like Coming Home

If you haven’t already heard it, please do your heart a favor and take a listen to our latest compilation, Feels Like Coming Home.   This project features 16 of our friends who spent time reflecting on their homes and wrote and recorded an original song about what it means to call somewhere home.  As a result, the album is really epic.  Special Passenger Records (Kelly & Amanda) took the album on tour last month to most of the cities where the bands live to out on release shows and interview bandmates.  Please check out www.feelslikecominghome.com to watch videos from the tour and keep up with the ongoing documentation of the project.

Dubb Nubb moves to Como

So, our babies graduated high school which means that they are officially not babies anymore. They are now college freshmen at the University of Missouri in Columbia which means that Hannah, Delia, Lizzie and I are all living in the same town.  This is a very special thing.  It means that we get to share meals, that I am officially a member of Dubb Nubb and that the four of us are starting a new band together!!!  Here is a list of  some other cool things that have happened to us lately:

1.  The Riverfront Times music feature article by our friend Mike.   He interviewed us and came to a bunch of our shows this summer and wrote a great article about Special Passenger and Dubb Nubb.  Read it here!

2. The Boone Dawdle.  We all played on the MKT trail during the True False Boone Dawdle, a bike ride to the winery in Rocheport.  Dubb Nubb played for 300 bikers next to a snow cone/pickle stand and Lizzie and Britt played and rode a tandem bike down the whole trail.  The next day, Dubb Nubb’s picture was in the front page of the Columbia Tribune!

3. LOU FEST!!!  Dubb Nubb played on the Area K stage for a really really nice group of friends, kids and people walking by.  The festival was awesome and we were very honored to get to play.  Oh, and Delia and my picture was in the paper the next day.  Go figure.

4.  We released a song!!!  Inspired by our time at Loufest, we released a song off the new Dubb Nubb album.  The song is called ‘Mound City Baby‘ and it is Dubb Nubb’s ode to St. Louis.  The song was written for our compilation project Feels Like Coming Home which will feature an awesome song by Lizzie too.  You can listen to the Dubb Nubb song below and download it off bandcamp.

5. Pearl and the Beard show!!!  Last week we opened for one of our favorite bands, Pearl and the Beard.  Sigh.  Just please see them next time they are in your town, ok?  And give them breakfast and hugs.  We can’t wait for them to come back for True False.

12 ” Pizza Split

Last week, along with our friends Distro Sux, we released the Comfort Zone/Task Force 12″ Pizza Split.  We have been working on this record for months and I’m super proud of how it turned out.  It has been a community effort of pitching in to screen print, stamp, make posters and lyrics pages and press 300 records.  The record itself has 23 total songs and I think it really reflects the punk community here in Columbia.  If you hold one in your hands, read the lyrics and listen to the album you will know what I mean.  Also, go to Hairhole shows.  No jerks.

Last November, I participated in a 48 hour band competition and created the band Comfort Zone in one weekend with three amazing people I had just met.  You can read more about my experience in 48 hours at Como Collective.  We stayed a band after that weekend and recorded our 11 songs for the album at the Hairhole back in March.  You can see a bunch of photos from our 8 hour recording session here.  Task Force is an awesome band that has been a Columbia staple for several years and they also practice at the Hairhole.  We released the album at their last show for a while due to traveling band members.

Here is a little teaser from the record – both of our bands have theme songs!!!   Listen to them!!!

Comfort Zone The Song

You can order a copy on our etsy page or just find one of us on the street in Columbia.

Cicada Summer

Last month, Columbia MO and many other parts of the country were infested with the sounds and the swarms of the 13 year cicadas.  I was on tour with Dubb Nubb in Murfreesboro, TN when I first experienced their deafening sounds.  Our couchsurfing hosts at House Pride told us their recipe for sauteed cicadas and Delia wrote a cicada song.  The next day Lizzie sent me a song she wrote for cicadas and we decided that we had to do a compilation album!  When we got back to Missouri things got a little nutty at Sparky’s and it seemed that everyone had something to say or sing about cicadas.  I even met up with Josh from Butterflies in Chapel Hill, NC during the J-Tran tour and he wrote a song about the cicada ice cream fiasco.  We ended up getting 17 songs (and a bonus track you get when you download the album!) including some of our favorite bands and several bands that were formed just for the project.  I’m really excited about the variety of the songs – there is acoustic, country, techno, ambient, rap, acapella, metal, electronic and rock n roll.

On the last day to turn in songs, my new friend Nelda and I did a songwriting workshop with a music class at Missouri Scholar’s Academy.  The group put together this song in about 30 minutes and we recorded it and surprised them at the end when we told them it would be on the album!  It looked like this:

On our walk home from doing the workshop, we ran into Robby Jones on his bike and he told us that he had also written a cicada song!  He biked home and got his guitar and we recorded his song in 20 minutes as the last last minute addition to the album.

Nelda drew the CD label art which is a beautiful addition to the cover art by Justin Schultz.  Thanks to Nelda and Kim for helping make all the CDs.  Thanks to all the bands for participating and taking time to write and record such awesome songs.  I hope you like the project – please download it for free on bandcamp, or any money you would like to donate will go to help us put out the next project.  (dubb nubb full length!  feels like coming home!)

Apparently the annual cicadas are coming out soon – so watch out and enjoy your summer!

stay cool,

amanda

It’s Our Birthday!!

Today is the two year anniversary of our first release, The Special Passenger Project. It came out at a cruise ship themed bash at 121 Studios on April 30, 2009 – a memorable and quite special night in our Jackson history. In the past two years we have released 13 projects and have hand made over 2,000 cd cases, t-shirts, wristbands and buttons.  We don’t have any more physical copies of the Special Passenger Project but you can stream it for free right here.  Those songs bring back some memories!!

Also, BIG congratulations to Chris and Rachel on their engagement!!!  Love them!!  Bachelorettes reunion for Rachel’s bachelorette party PLEASE!!!

March Madness!

Dudes.  It is totally the middle of April and worlds of things are happening in our tiny little world but here are some things that happened back in the day.  (March)  It started out with the True False Film Festival which was wonderful enough to invite both Dubb Nubb and Lizzie Wright Super Space Ship to play before films. People liked us. We released a special Lizzie EP just for festival attendees with 4 songs that she wrote on her birthday and BUG TRADING CARDS!!

OK ALSO, DUBB NUBB RECORDED A FULL LENGTH ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. Zoe McRuth came to town for a week and recorded a Dubb Nubb full length album that will come out this July. It was a blast and we are so excited to hear the songs and then let you hear them too. It’s 11 songs and features some of our friends like Lizzie and Emily D. and Cecelia and I even played drums and glockenspiel. Zoe is also an amazing photographer and took pics of the nubbs playing a house show, and recording, and becoming MERMAIDS!!!!
